I’ve just finished this painting. Titles often occur to me when I first notice the painting is, not so much completed, but something in the image grabs me and makes me not want to do anything more. I’d been reading Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, and was struck by those lines: ‘And nothing is but what is not’ -looking at the painting, I found myself muttering - ‘but what is not’; it doesn’t make any sense but that became the title. Perhaps the painting is a bit like a conjuring trick - conjuring something from what is not (formless coloured paint) but also about a reaching after something that is just beyond the understanding, to what is not.
‘But What is Not’ - Oil on canvas 120x140cm.
