British Painter based in East Sussex.

I was born in 1962 in Chelsea above my father's antiques shop and grew up with an ever changing 'stock' of furniture, statuary and paintings in our home. I was never very interested in art at school but developed a passion for acting and the theatre which led to my main foundation in art training at the legendary Drama Centre, London. Whilst waiting for work I enrolled at a life class and couldn't stop drawing and painting from then on. There followed a year at the John Cass School of Art under the tutelage of Alfred Daniels and then three years in the life room at the Byam Shaw school of art where I learnt the craft of painting. Many years later a week long summer school in Tonbridge Wells (founded by Roy Oxlade) sharpened my understanding of the possibilities for contemporary painting. I'm also an experienced teacher in community education having held regular painting and drawing classes at Lewisham Community College and Richmond School of Art, amongst others. In 2010 I moved with my  family to Hastings in East Sussex where I am now based.

Statement

My paintings evolve from a free experimentation with colour and the material texture of paint that deals essentially with representing interior environments but can also be evocative of weather and nature. It's a questioning, intuitive process and the form the painting eventually takes is always completely unexpected. Very often the subject of 'The Studio' is used as a metaphor for life that includes the tools of the trade, models, objects, mock ups of events and happenings but perhaps above all it represents a place for free experimentation and learning. And that learning is never complete. The Apollonian imperative 'Know thyself' is, I find, a never ending and mysterious task. Like many contemporary paintings today my work is neither abstract or figurative but fits somewhere in an in-between, undefined area.
